Back in November 2016 I started organising women’s social mountain bike rides from Café Adventure in Hope, which I co-own with my partner Billy. The rides soon became very popular and attracted a lot of ladies from all over the Peak District and further afield. We ride regularly on alternate Wednesday evenings, either leaving from the Café in Hope or at another location around the Peaks. The rides are social and easy going. Plenty of stopping, chatting, laughing and encouraging each other in relaxed and friendly environment with no pressure!
We welcome new riders on a regular basis and the community keeps growing and growing. We currently have over 270 members in the Facebook group. Over the winter months we’ve still had the core group of keen riders coming out in all weathers. It’s been a cold winter and a lot of riding through snow drifts during blizzard conditions.
As we’re inching into the spring/summer months the group of regular riders is growing again. On some of the more glorious evenings of last summer we’d have 20+ female mountain bikers out for a ride, and I’m predicting this summer we may have even more!
As well as our regular Wednesday night rides we also have a daytime casual social ride on the first Saturday of the month. I also organise other events for the group including maintenance workshops, skills coaching, weekends away and social nights. Last year we had a weekend away in South Wales riding at Bike Park Wales and the Forest of Dean.
We also had a good bunch of us compete in the Hope Tech Women’s Enduro at Gisburn which was a first time mtb event for most of us!
We’ve got a few plans coming together already for this summer. The first being our MTB Spring Weekender from Café Adventure next weekend (28/29th April). This is going to be a whole weekend packed full of fun rides and socials. There will be a women’s ride on the Saturday morning, followed by a post-ride yoga class run by Alice at Hope Yoga Physio and in the evening we are opening late serving food from the café and holding a quiz and raffle fundraiser for the Mend our Mountains, Cut Gate campaign.
It’s been fantastic to meet and ride with so many different ladies over the last year and a bit. I’ve made so many new riding buddies and it’s really pushed me into the mtbworld, helped improve my own skills and fitness and made riding so much more fun for me! I’d recommend women’s social group rides to any gal starting out riding mountain bikes. There seems to be more and more opportunities and events cropping up for women in mountain biking. It’s fab, there’s always a women’s ride, event or coaching, somewhere for you to join. Anyone local or a frequent visitor to the Peaks, check out our social rides from Café Adventure and our Facebook group here. Hope to see you at a ride soon. P.S we also organise mixed group rides for guys to join in the fun too!
Celebrating the Café Adventure’s Women Riders 1stBirthday with a ride and cake!
